Cloud-based process control

Andreas Mühlbauer,

"Prevent errors before they occur"

To prevent system failures and production downtimes, system supplier Kelch has developed a cloud-based process control and status monitoring system together with Teamviewer and Vodafone. Viktor Grauer, Member of the Management Board and Head of Innovation Management at Kelch, spoke to Andreas Mühlbauer about the background and application aspects.

Mr. Grauer, what was the trigger for the "Kelch IoT" project?

Kelch IoT was created with the aim of offering our customers the best possible support. In this specific case, this means consistently preventing system errors right from the development phase.

How did the collaboration with your partner companies on this project come about and who plays what role?

Vodafone is the expert for the entire topic of connectivity, i.e. the data line between the end device and the cloud. With its Machinelink 4G solutions, Vodafone offers the ideal platform for industrial connectivity and therefore for IoT applications. Everything that has to do with data collection and data visualization, i.e. the collection and display of data in a dashboard, we implement together with Teamviewer, one of the world's leading providers of remote and web sessions. Both the geographical proximity and the fact that Vodafone and Teamviewer were already in contact for joint projects led to us coming together in this network. This allows us to offer our customers the best possible services. At the same time, the user companies benefit from the continuous further development of all project partners.

"Kelch IoT" is designed to monitor setting tools. How exactly does the customer benefit from this and what requirements must they fulfill in order to integrate the system?

The added value for our customers lies in what is known as predictive maintenance. Kelch IoT protects devices from impending failures by reporting irregularities during the setting processes at an early stage. As our presetting devices in particular are the last resort for the tools before the machine tool, their failure would be fatal in many cases. With Kelch IoT, we minimize this risk in a way that offers companies added convenience with greater reliability.

This allows companies to intervene before any damage occurs - and to fully rely on their system landscape in day-to-day business. The prerequisite for use is very simple. The device must be able to communicate with the Kelch IoT Cloud Dashboard. This works either directly via the customer's network or via the Vodafone Machinelink 4G system.

What role does data security play in "Kelch IoT" and how can you guarantee it?

As soon as we talk about the cloud, dashboard, remote service and support, it's always about data security. Kelch IoT does not read any sensitive customer data, but only parameters that show the status of the setting tool. Nevertheless, we guarantee the user companies complete sovereignty over their data and the security that this communication channel cannot be used for any other purpose.

Kelch IoT offers the option of using special ports for data transmission that do not allow any further routing through the customer network. In addition, the data on the cloud server is completely inaccessible. The collaboration with the experts from Vodafone and Teamviewer is a further guarantee of professionalism and data security.
