Flow drilling screws for automotive manufacturers
Atlas Copco wants to take over Klingel Fügetechnik
The Swedish industrial group Atlas Copco intends to take over the joining technology division of Klingel GmbH. The Geretsried-based company specializes in flow drilling, a mechanical joining technique that is used especially in the automotive industry. It is very well suited for joining materials in mixed constructions, such as aluminum and steel. In this process, a fast-rotating screw acts as both a drill and a joining element.
Klingel Joining Technology is one of three business divisions of Klingel GmbH. The division achieved a turnover of around 8.5 million euros in 2017. Atlas Copco takes over 23 employees.
"The use of new materials and the combination of lightweight materials in the automotive industry also require innovative joining technologies," says Henrik Elmin, President of Atlas Copco's Industrial Technology division. "With this acquisition, we are expanding our range and gaining further expertise in the field of screw feeding and automation for the automotive industry."
The purchase price is subordinated in relation to Atlas Copco's market capitalization and will not be disclosed. The business area will be acquired from Bretten-based Atlas Copco IAS and integrated into the Industrial Assembly Solutions (IAS) division within the Industrial Technology Group area. In this division, the industrial group already offers adhesive bonding and dispensing technology as well as self-pierce riveting technology solutions from a single source.
The takeover is still subject to legal review and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2018. kp
