Shielded MIPI cables for high data rates

Vision Components supplies its MIPI camera modules with a shielded FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) cable, which was specially developed for the MIPI modules and has a high data transmission rate.

The company uses the MIPI-CSI-2 camera interface and the Raspberry Pi connector concept. The Raspi boards have a high market penetration and several other manufacturers have already adopted the same connector concept. Until a standard is formulated, this choice ensures the broadest possible suitability of the VC MIPI modules, according to the company. The camera boards manufactured by VC in Germany can be connected to various widely used CPU boards. This allows developers to quickly test concepts for image processing and configure embedded vision systems easily and cost-effectively.

The VC-MIPI camera boards with 22-pin connector can be connected to 15- and 22-pin MIPI interfaces via cables with two or four transmission lanes. This configuration allows the high speeds of the MIPI-CSI-2 standard to be fully utilized. Most processors process 1.5 Gbps per lane, which corresponds to 6 Gbps with four lanes or 600 MByte/s with ten-bit pixel resolution, twice as fast as USB3 cameras.

According to the manufacturer, the new cables developed by Vision Components are high-performance components: These are flexible PCBs with a reference and shield layer on one side and 100 Ω differential conductor pairs. They are designed to ensure interference-free MIPI transmission. Vision Components has defined two pins as trigger input and flash output without impairing the function of the host systems. The trigger input enables single shots as well as video streams. All settings can be adjusted for each image: Shutter speed, gain, image size and position and binning. This allows very fast processes to be captured and synchronized. as
