Harsh Environment Connector
Made for the rough stuff
The HEC (Harsh Environment Connector) is designed for harsh environmental influences and is therefore suitable for outdoor applications. The connector is characterized by UV and salt spray resistance, shock and vibration resistance and protection classes IP68 and IP69K.
In addition to the originally planned outdoor use in agricultural vehicles, the HEC is also used in many other applications. For example, it is used for tunnel lighting or professional flash units for illumination. Thanks to its resistance to environmental influences, the simple locking mechanism and its robust yet compact design, the HEC meets almost all requirements for outdoor applications. The company also refers to the UL approval and VDE certification.
Previously available as an eight-pole (4 signal+3 power+PE) and twelve-pole (signal) version, the power range has now been extended, as many applications require more and more electrical loads to meet increased requirements such as convenience, accuracy and flexibility. The HEC Power can be used with a rated current of up to 32 amps and a rated voltage of 600 volts. This makes it the most powerful plug in the entire portfolio, according to Binder. As with the eight and twelve-pole versions, the wires can be connected using turned crimp contacts. Connection cross-sections of 2.5 to six square millimetres can be achieved. The HEC Power has been available since fall 2017.
Connectors usually only fulfill the IP protection classes when mated. However, protection is often required even when they are not plugged in, which was previously usually provided by a protective cap. However, as these are often forgotten or lost and are also easily soiled and require more effort to attach, the flange part with hinged cover is the right solution: it cannot be lost and provides simple, secure protection even without consciously closing it. The cover is spring-loaded and is automatically positioned correctly when opened. Another advantage: the installation space remains the same - as in the standard version. Protection classes IP68/IP69K are achieved with all three pole numbers. The hinged cover will be available in spring 2018.
Particularly in extreme outdoor applications, not only the connector but also the connected cable must be able to withstand the harsh environmental influences. Shocks, impacts and other mechanical stresses are acknowledged by most cables with a premature exodus. One option is to use an expensive special cable. The alternative is to lay the cable in a protective conduit in order to achieve the required protection. This protective conduit must also be connected to the plug connector in order to fulfill its full function, so that the connecting cable is protected throughout. The corresponding protective conduit with adapter in the Binder portfolio is available as a retrofit set, but also as a complete set including cable connector or flange connector. This adapter fulfills the IP67 degree of protection. Jana Wagner/as
