Pick & Place
It's all about the food
Pick and place in food production. ASA is focusing on a compact high-speed pick-and-place application for handling folding cartons in the food sector. Three coordinated robots of the same type each take on a central function in product position detection, product alignment, precise product placement and individually controlled sorting of the products.
With the integration of the new robot from Fanuc, which ASA will be showing exclusively at the trade fair in its versatile functions, the company is going beyond the usual configurations in the industry. The new SR-3iA from Fanuc was used to maximize availability in robot-supported automation. The SR-3iA is technically designed to meet the high cycle times required in food packaging, while guaranteeing optimum production reliability and productivity.
However, ASA offers much more with its application: The simulation shows disordered folding cartons in the product flow, which are visually recorded and digitized in their various positions using a vision system consisting of a high-resolution camera and a light source positioned at the bottom of the conveyor belt.
This gives the first robot the command to pick up the carton safely using its mechanical gripper and place it in an orderly position on a parallel conveyor belt with pinpoint accuracy. This line tracking means that the robot forms a precisely continuous, aligned row of boxes.
The subsequent second robot takes over the task of picking up the desired number of folding boxes from the ordered row individually using a suction cup and placing them on a chute for manual removal, depending on the request using Fanuc web browser technology. All cartons not picked up by the second robot are picked up by another line tracking system and placed by the third robot onto a flexible Carryline chain link conveyor system by means of a suction cup. Using this space-saving conveyor technology, the cartons are returned to the first robot via a 180-degree curve in a circular path.
As far as possible, the robots will work with different capacities and different working heights (vertical strokes). To demonstrate the variety of gripping technology, the robots are equipped with different grippers and suction cups. Both Schunk and Schmalz are partners of ASA in this area. as
