Drilling steel
New cutting material grade: Strong in steel
The new IC5500 cutting material grade from Iscar is particularly suitable for drilling steel. It has a special coating and offers high toughness combined with increased wear resistance.
Indexable inserts with the special MTCVD coating from IC5500 are impressive when drilling carbon steel and alloyed steels (ISO P). Iscar has optimized the structure of the coating to improve toughness. A thick layer of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) minimizes crater wear and ensures increased comb crack resistance.
In addition, the adhesion between the aluminum oxide and titanium carbonitride layers in the adhesive surface has been increased. This makes the grade even more wear-resistant. A special post-treatment also reduces residual stress and improves resistance to chipping. The combination of the new coating and post-treatment results in very good cutting performance and high process reliability for the user.
Iscar offers indexable inserts with IC5500 in three different variants: SOMX 060304-DT, SOMX 070305-DT and SOMT 09T306-DT. The inserts have proven their wear resistance in tests. An alloyed heat-treated steel was machined with IC5500 at a cutting speed of 160 meters per minute and a feed rate of 0.18 millimetres. Compared to conventional grades, the number of holes drilled was many times higher.
