Focus on new machines and digitalization

The Index Group presented over 20 lathes and solutions for digitalization at its Open House. The Group is thus taking an important step towards the future.

The Index Group welcomed around 2,000 visitors from all over the world to its Open House in Reichenbach from March 26 to 29. They were able to find out about the latest developments from the Index Group and its 29 co-exhibitors. The Index Group itself showcased over 20 turning machines and invited visitors to get an idea of the cloud-based iXworld platform. With this platform, Index is responding to the advancing digitalization. It comprises the iXplore, iXshop, iXservices and iX4.0 modules, which can be used to access digital support for the entire process chain via various apps - from obtaining information when purchasing a machine, to the operation and condition of the machine, through to service and spare parts procurement. It therefore goes beyond purely technical functions into the service and organization area.

Link between the digital index world and customer processes

The iXworld provides access to information, products and services from Index as well as to the iX4.0, iXshop and iXservices portals. iX4.0 is the core element: the IoT platform integrates the Index and Traub machines into the digital world using an edge computer. The edge computer, a so-called genubox that is supplied with the machines, collects data from control systems and sensors, performs initial analyses if necessary and delivers them to the processing software in the cloud. Older machines up to 2007 can also be connected to the cloud using the OPC UA protocol. A Raspberry Pi-based IoT connector developed by Index, which can be placed in the control cabinet, is used to integrate even older Index and Traub machines as well as machines from other manufacturers into the digital platform.

What is important for users is that they can decide for themselves which data leaves the Edge computer and is uploaded. The data remains the property of the user.

In the iXshop, users can order all the products they need to operate the machines. Spare parts and machine-related services are also available via the store. Another advantage for users is the connection to supplier stores. For example, the online marketplace of steel supplier Klöckner is linked to the store.

iXservices is the service portal with which users can manage all their machines, including those from third-party providers. It offers fault, repair, maintenance and care management. Remote access via smart glasses and teleservice is also possible. A knowledge platform with course programs for metalworkers is also integrated.

Universal lathes Index B400 and Traub TNA400

Another highlight of the Open House 2019 were the Index B400 and Traub TNA400 universal lathes. Both lathes are classically designed with a tailstock that sits on roller guides. The purely electric assembly can be positioned freely from the NC program.

The Index B400 was designed for the machining of flange and shaft parts from a quantity of 1. Equipped with the Siemens Sinumerik 840D sl control system, the universal turning machine is now also available with a counter spindle. The almost identical Traub TNA400 is equipped with a Mitsubishi CNC TX8i-s V8 control.
