Planar motor system
Workpiece transport with free-floating movers
With XPlanar, Beckhoff has a transport system in its portfolio in which planar movers float freely above arbitrarily arranged planar tiles. The system achieves flexible and precise positioning.
The XPlanar system combines the individual arrangement of planar tiles with multi-dimensional positioning of the planar movers hovering above them. The movers can be moved two-dimensionally without jerking or contact at speeds of up to four meters per second, 2 g acceleration and 50 micrometre positioning repeatability, all without noise or abrasion.
The scalable planar motor system can simplify the design of machines and systems. Thanks to the flexible mover positioning and movement dynamics, product flows can be individually divided and previously necessary robots or other inflexible mechanical devices can be efficiently replaced. The contactless movement of the movers also eliminates wear, emissions and the carry-over of impurities.
Flexible movement functions
The XPlanar system is based on 240 x 240 millimeter planar tiles that can be arranged in application-oriented geometries. These contain the entire electronics and Ethercat G communication. A freely selectable number of planar movers float above them - made possible by integrated permanent magnets. The movers can be used not only horizontally, but also vertically and even upside down. There is a choice of four different planar arm mover types in different sizes and with different payloads. The two-dimensional X/Y positioning of the movers is supplemented by movement functions: lifting and lowering, tilting and rotating.
The collision-free, synchronized movement of several movers and automatic path optimisation are further features provided by the Twincat automation software. This allows the maximum payload to be increased by moving several movers together.
XPlanar is suitable as a transport system in all areas of mechanical engineering, particularly for the automation of packaging, assembly, sorting and picking processes. The free choice of surfaces - easy-to-clean glass, stainless steel in hygienic design or plastic film - also supports use in cleanrooms, in the pharmaceutical and food industries and under vacuum conditions. as
