Afag is a supplier of components for assembly automation, enabling components to be fed, handled and transported quickly and precisely. Its customers include globally active machine manufacturers and system integrators who supply automated assembly systems to companies in the biotechnology and medical technology sectors, among others. In the fight against the coronavirus, the Afag subsidiary based in Amberg, Bavaria, was commissioned to develop feeding stations for production equipment for Covid-19 tests and deliver them within a few weeks.

Not only were the feeding systems needed very quickly, they also had to meet strict quality requirements.

The feeding systems were not only needed very quickly. They also had to meet strict quality requirements. Afag combined its patented drive technology with polyamide feed bowls that can feed bulk parts quietly, precisely and reliably. All conveyor bowls are generally designed in CAD and transferred directly to NC files for precise five-axis milling. This not only makes the components reproducible at all times, but also cost-effective for repeat systems.

It took less than three weeks from ordering to delivery of the feeding solution. By comparison, this type of order usually takes ten to twelve weeks. "We are very pleased that we were able to react so quickly," says Helmut Niederer, Managing Director of Afag Automation North America: "Our technology, combined with our expertise, has proven to be very efficient." Markus Werro, CEO of the Swiss Afag Holding, adds: "It was certainly not our easiest project, but one of the most rewarding. Our team worked closely with the customer and went to extraordinary lengths to meet all requirements in order to deliver on time." as
