Schaeffler and Audi develop e-tron FE07
Schaeffler and Audi will continue to form a powerful team in Formula E. The globally active automotive and industrial supplier from Herzogenaurach and the brand from Ingolstadt have agreed on this. The joint development of the Audi e-tron FE07 for the seventh season starting in fall 2020 has already begun.
Schaeffler has been a technology partner of Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler since the series debuted in the fall of 2014. With 40 podium finishes and more than 1,000 points before the start of the sixth season, the team has set standards on and off the track. Schaeffler uses the know-how gained in the all-electric racing series for its development work.
"Schaeffler, Audi and Formula E - it's a combination that was a perfect fit right from the start," says Matthias Zink, Member of the Board of Management Automotive OEM at Schaeffler. "As a company, we want to use our powertrain and chassis technologies to innovate sustainable mobility. Formula E is an ideal stage to present these ideas in the field of electric mobility and to measure ourselves in a competition at the highest sporting level. At the same time, the commitment has been inspiring fans and employees alike for years."
A partner of the private ABT Sportsline team for the first three years, the automotive and industrial supplier has been developing the powertrain for Formula E together with Audi since Audi joined the team in the fall of 2017. The combination of engine, transmission, inverter and software is the heart of the vehicle in a race car that is otherwise identical in construction for all teams. In the future, Schaeffler will be involved as a technology and development partner, primarily in areas such as transmission, engine and drive concept development, as well as providing support in test bench work and prototype construction, and in bearing development and production. "I am delighted that Audi and Schaeffler will continue to form a strong team in the coming years," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass. "We have already achieved a lot together, but in view of the ever-increasing power density in Formula E, we also have big goals for the future. The fact that we can tackle the development of the Audi e-tron FE07 for season seven with combined forces and as a well-coordinated team is therefore of particular importance."
For Schaeffler, the electric racing series is the ideal test laboratory for developing mobility solutions for the mobility of tomorrow. "In Formula E, we gain a lot of expertise that we transfer from the race track to our development departments," says Dr. Jochen Schröder, Head of the E-Mobility business division at Schaeffler. "The relevance of the knowledge of holistic drive system understanding, electric motor, power electronics and transmission is already evident in the Schaeffler e-axle transmissions produced for the Audi e-tron since 2018 and will flow into future e-drive components and systems that are currently in series development at Schaeffler."
