Strategic partnership between EOS and Ethihad Airways Engineering

EOS and Etihad Airways Engineering, the largest service provider in the Middle East for aircraft maintenance, repair and operations, have agreed a strategic partnership to expand industrial 3D printing capabilities in aviation.

The partnership was agreed at the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Formula 1 race and enables the company to manufacture aircraft parts at its site in Abu Dhabi. Visitors to the race were able to see a full-scale additively manufactured front wing of a Formula 1 racing car and talk to 3D printing experts.

During the initial phase of this collaboration, for which EOS technology and thus EOS systems for additive manufacturing (AM) will be used, machine, process and material qualification will be carried out in accordance with aviation regulations.

The next step is to additively manufacture suitable components for the cabin interior following a structured selection process. The technology offers considerable added value in terms of simpler repairs, lightweight design, shorter lead times and flexible customization options - especially in the course of aircraft modifications.

"Etihad is continuously investing in new technologies and has identified additive manufacturing as a key technology for aircraft interiors and future non-aviation applications," said Bernhard Randerath, Vice President Design, Engineering and Innovation at Etihad Airways Engineering. "The technology is an important tool for design and innovation in our industry. Etihad is proud to be working towards the vision of additively manufactured parts for cabin interiors on this basis."

Markus Glasser, Senior Vice President Export Region at EOS, adds: "Etihad is an industry leader in aircraft maintenance and engineering solutions. We share the same mindset as our companies are committed to the highest quality and continuous technical innovation. We are proud to accompany our partner on this innovation journey and take aircraft interior manufacturing to a new level."

Following the initial phase, Etihad Airways Engineering will certify the additive manufacturing process, expand capacity for this manufacturing technology and work with EOS to develop, test and qualify new polymer materials. In the long term, Etihad plans to introduce the technology to its customers and its wider business environment.
