Paris (dpa) - The demand for electricity from data centers will more than double by 2030, according to a forecast by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Driven by artificial intelligence, global demand will climb to 945 terawatt hours, which is slightly more than Japan's electricity consumption, according to the IEA report. According to the report, data centers in the USA will consume more electricity by 2030 than the production of all energy-intensive goods such as cement, chemicals and steel combined.

According to the IEA, the AI trend is leading to a resurgence in demand for electricity, even in affluent economies where it has recently stagnated or declined in some cases. The additional demand poses new challenges for the energy sectors. According to the report, data centers are becoming the main consumers of electricity in many places. They are needed not only because of the increasing use of AI, but also because of 5G mobile communications and the business with clouds and streaming services.
