Ever higher productivity

Hard turning with HFT

As ever higher productivity is required in hard turning, Sumitomo has developed the HFT (High Feed Turning) system for high-feed turning, which can reduce machining times by a factor of 6 to 10 and will be on show at Intec.

With cutting speeds of up to 150 meters per minute and a cutting depth of 0.15 millimetres, as an example for a workpiece made of case-hardened steel with a hardness of around 60 HRC, the values seem rather ordinary for hard turning. What makes the difference is the comparatively high feed rate of 1.2 millimetres per revolution. A downstream finishing pass at a reduced feed rate produces almost shiny surfaces. Very rigid machine and tool conditions are a prerequisite for the new high-feed turning process.

The monoblock tool holders are also matched to this. The insert seats of the tools transfer the higher cutting forces into the machine without vibrations. The cutting edges themselves consist of an octagonal indexable insert with a full CBN coating. The insert is therefore robust and can be used both in dry machining and under emulsion. The cutting geometry is equipped with a drag cutting edge, which smoothes the surface of the workpiece after the cut. am
