Cooperation in the development of augmented reality data glasses
The Canadian start-up company North has developed commercial data glasses. Focals offers a transparent, holographic display that only the wearer can see. The key materials come from a collaboration with Covestro.
The display floats an arm's length in front of the wearer and networks, connects and informs. With Focals, users can see and respond to texts, get directions, check the weather, request a cab or talk to Amazon's Alexa. The clear and minimalist user interface gives control over what's happening in the digital world without distracting from what's in front of you.
Innovative raw materials
One of the many challenges in the development of the data glasses is to ideally combine form and functionality. After all, Focals should look like ordinary glasses. To achieve this, North has teamed up with Covestro. The materials specialist supplies the Canadian start-up company with Bayfol HX specialty films. They impress with their outstanding properties. The films are not only thin and light, but also versatile. They also impress with their complete transparency. But that's not all: as with smartphones and tablets, battery life also plays a key role in data glasses. Thanks to Covestro's innovative special films, the devices can save significantly more energy. The company thus provides the basis for the development of high-performance yet stylish smart glasses. The films are manufactured at the Leverkusen site, among others.
Covestro intends to continue driving forward the development of AR products in the future. Thanks to its many years of experience, the company is well positioned to continue offering innovative solutions in this area. dsc
