In the run-up to the Hannover Messe, Andreas Mühlbauer spoke to Oliver Winzenried, CEO of Wibu-Systems, about the innovations the company is presenting in Hannover and the technological trends at the trade fair.
What new products will you be showing at the trade fair?
In March of this year, we launched CmReady. CmReady equips qualified memory cards with CodeMeter functions by binding the software-based CmActLicense to a removable device such as an SD card instead of to a fingerprint of the target system. This allows software manufacturers and manufacturers of intelligent devices to bind their licenses to this memory card in a simple and mobile way, similar to a CmDongle. We offer CmReady as a turnkey solution. The DP memory cards from Swissbit are the first memory cards to be CmReady-qualified.
We offer our CmCloud solution for accessing licenses and using protected software from any location or device. The CmCloudContainer can be thought of as a high-performance dongle of any size in the cloud. It serves as an alternative license container alongside the CmDongle protection hardware or the CmActLicense software-based solution as a key store. All the user or target system needs is an online connection and the access data in the form of credentials for their CmCloudContainer. Our customers are already using CmCloud. We will be demonstrating new application possibilities at the trade fair.
Industry 4.0, machine learning and 3D printing are also among the top topics at the trade fair. What trends do you see?
Clearly, the topic of security will become even more important, as hackers will continue to attempt to paralyze companies or city administrations, for example, through attacks. As a manufacturer of protection and licensing solutions, we offer our customers concepts to protect their software from product piracy and manipulation and to monetize their software through new business models. Naturally, we pay close attention to security in all our development teams and have therefore expanded our processes. There is now a "Product Security Board" member who is a security specialist in each of the various development groups, so that the security aspect is already taken into account during development. In addition, our CERT team is continuously working on the further development of our security concepts so that the requirements of our customers' various sectors are met and potential vulnerabilities are closed as quickly as possible.
What possible applications do your solutions have?
CodeMeter is so versatile that software developers and manufacturers of intelligent devices from a wide range of industries can protect and license their software and thus benefit from new business models. The CodeMeter Protection Suite is a toolbox with which developers can conveniently and securely integrate protection into their software. There are variants for native code such as C or C++, for managed code such as .NET or even Java, JavaScript and Python. Executable files or libraries can also be automatically protected and licensed without the need to change the source code. The CodeMeter Protection Suite is continuously being expanded. Python is used as a development language for AI applications, particularly in the field of AI. With our AxProtector Python, applications can be protected against reverse engineering and manipulation can be prevented. In addition, the AI models and thus the valuable know-how can be protected. Optimum integration into business processes is another prerequisite for the profitable implementation of new business models such as subscription and pay-per-use models. With CodeMeter License Central and our hosting services, we offer an optimal connection to the eCommerce or ERP systems of product manufacturers.
