ABB frequency inverters can be equipped with various integrated safety functions to simplify the design process and engineering in mechanical engineering and automation. With the new Profisafe plug-in module (FSPS-21), several functions can be realized simultaneously, the Profisafe communication, important drive-based safety functions and the PC tool communication.

The new plug-in module handles communication for the machine control system, ensures safety and enables data exchange.

Machine builders must ensure that machines and systems can be controlled safely and stopped quickly in the event of faults or hazards. In order to meet the high safety requirements, designers have in the past implemented the safety functions using external wired devices. This is not only costly and time-consuming, but also usually requires additional space. Drive-based safety solutions solve these challenges.

The new possibilities of drive-based functional safety ensure safe control and smooth communication between the frequency inverter and the programmable logic controller (PLC) in numerous machines and systems - from extruders to centrifuges. This is made possible by Proisafe using the Profinet IO communication protocol.

"The new plug-in module handles communication for the machine control system, while also ensuring functional safety and enabling data exchange between the PC tool and the frequency inverter via a single Ethernet connection. This not only simplifies installation, but also commissioning, as no further safety configuration is required in the frequency inverter, thus significantly reducing the need for training," said Fred Donabauer, Head of Product Management Frequency Inverter & PLC at ABB Motion Germany.

The FSPS-21 module is certified by TÜV Nord and is compatible with ABB frequency inverters from the ACS380, ACS580 and ACS880 series. It supports the safety functions "Safe Torque Off" (STO) and "Safe Stop 1" (SS1). The SIL3/PLe safety level ensures maximum system safety, making the module suitable for even the most demanding applications. as
