Multi-axis drive system

Extended power range and integrated safety technology

Sieb & Meyer has extended the performance of the SD2 multi-axis solution with integrated safety technology. A variant is now available in which the maximum rated current has been increased from 42 Aeff at 16 kHz to 80 Aeff at 16 kHz. This opens up new areas of application for the multi-axis drive system.

"As is usual in the SD2 product family, the new variant is also available as an air-cooled model," says Torsten Blankenburg, Chief Technology Officer at Sieb & Meyer. "In combination with the corresponding PS2 power supply units, multi-axis solutions with an output of up to 60 kW can be realized." The new variant was originally designed for a manufacturer of grinding machines, who can use it to cover the entire range of grinding spindles used.

The customer opted for the SD2 due to various advantages, including the reduced wiring effort, the integrated safety functions and the control via Profinet. In general, the operation of high speeds is crucial in this application.

It is also important that the motor only heats up slightly in order to ensure high machining quality and keep rotor losses as low as possible. The flexibility of the machine is also relevant: It must be possible to change between different grinding spindles quickly and easily - it should therefore be possible to save different motor parameter sets in the drive amplifiers. The SD2 multi-axis solution can meet these and other requirements of grinding applications - and thanks to the new variant, it can now also cover an extended power range.
