Human-robot interaction at the trade fair

Sumitomo Drive Technologies is presenting its drive solutions for automation and robotics at Automatica 2023 together with the Lafert Group. The company will be showcasing two different applications of the Tuaka drive system for robot applications at its stand.

The fully integrated Tuaka drives can be configured modularly, with high-resolution encoders, integrated torque sensors or extended safety functions. This gives companies the flexibility to build and program any type of robot application that requires maximum precision.

Visitors experience Tuaka in action

With its integrated torque sensor, the Tuaka actuator at Automatica demonstrates how effortlessly highly complex automation solutions can be built. The trade visitors will have the opportunity to experience this using a simple human-robot interaction as an example. A single, hand-guided axis will be on display for visitors to experience the sensitivity live. The fine and responsive resolution of the torque is not only important for human-oriented automation solutions, it can also protect the workpiece and machine and increase overall system performance. Thanks to the direct processing of information about the applied torque in the controller of the Tuaka Drive axes, all doors are open to the customer to design efficient and innovative systems.

Visitors to the stand will also be able to see a three-axis robot arm in action, equipped with three Tuaka-Drive actuators. The interaction of several Tuaka-Drive actuators is intended to show how a robot can be easily constructed with any structural components. Various modern features, such as collision detection, have been implemented to illustrate a collaborative robot. The high precision of the Tuaka is ensured by backlash-free gears from the new E-Cyclo series in conjunction with a powerful servo motor in the smallest possible installation space and low weight. The above-average rigidity reduces interference - for high-precision applications and dynamic motion control with a high repetition rate.

Compact AGVs and AMRs with compact drive controller

Sumitomo Drive Technologies will also be presenting a new version of its drive controller for automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) at Automatica. The Smartris Drive Compact is a compact drive controller, about as small as a computer mouse, but with the same range of functions as a standard model.

The Smartris drive package, which combines the three components gearbox, servomotor and drive controller, is a joint development by Sumitomo Drive Technologies and the Lafert Group. The AGV/AMR solution is available in three sizes and different versions. In combination with the Eco-S series, the new Smartris Drive Compact transports a total weight of up to 800 kilograms at a speed of up to two meters per second.

The single-stage cyclo principle in the gearbox, the directly mounted servomotor and the in-wheel structure ensure that Smartris is compact. Smartris was specially developed for flexible use in confined installation situations and meets the industry-standard requirements for technology and reliability. At the heart of Sumitomo Drive Technologies' gearbox solutions for robotics and automation is the Fine-Cyclo gearbox series.
