Part-turn actuators
Double security in the port
Bonfiglioli slewing drive solutions increase the safety and efficiency of a large Australian port facility.
Due to increased trade with Asia and the booming Australian economy, port facilities have expanded significantly in recent years. Stacker reclaimers play an important role in this as they enable the stockpiling, blending and stockpiling of bulk materials. This application is typical of the bulk materials industry and requires long operating times in harsh environments. Due to the difficult environmental conditions, the choice of a robust, efficient drive solution is crucial.
In an Australian port facility, two Bonfiglioli part-turn actuators are used in conjunction with three 316 planetary bevel gearboxes from the manufacturer. One of them as a spare to minimize downtime and production losses. This solution was installed to operate a stockyard unit for a major Australian ship loading facility.
The part-turn actuators are crucial for the efficiency of the operating processes. To ensure smooth operation at all times, Bonfiglioli's part-turn actuators offer a double backup for increased safety. "In addition to the usual torque limiters found on most actuators, the customized part-turn actuators have an additional encoder on the bevel gear stage. This encoder has sensors that measure the actuator at slow speed and send data to the PLC, which stops the actuator if any problems are detected," explains Harry Singh, Project Engineer at Bonfiglioli Australia.
To ensure additional safety for problem-free operation, the drives have an additional sensor device (proxy sensors) that detects even the smallest deviations in speed between the motor and gearbox shaft. The sensors and all components of the gearbox come from globally proven and ISO-certified brand companies.
