Interview with Robert Lackermeier and Dirk Fedder

Drive specialist ABM Greiffenberger and Kostal Industrie Elektrik have entered into a strategic partnership and are jointly offering system solutions on the market. In this interview, Robert Lackermeier (left), CEO of ABM, and Dirk Fedder (right), Business Unit Manager Drive at Kostal, talk about the strategic direction and the benefits for customers.

SCOPE: How long have ABM and Kostal been working together?
Robert Lackermeier: ABM and Kostal have been working together in the project business for selected applications since January 2017. Our solutions are used in conveyor belts, pumps and fans, for example. However, the joint system expertise is also evident in agitators, mixers, gate drives and many other industrial applications.

SCOPE: What were the reasons for the cooperation?
Lackermeier: Our common goal is to create intelligent solutions for our customers that are reliable and powerful in practice. Our motors and geared motors as well as the Inveor drive controllers from Kostal are the ideal combination to meet the market's requirements for durable and energy-efficient drive technology.

SCOPE: How has this cooperation developed?
Lackermeier: We rate the cooperation to date as very positive. We are currently working on a large number of customer projects. The volume in euros is in the double-digit million range. We are therefore absolutely satisfied with the cooperation.

SCOPE: And what does the distribution of expertise look like?
Lackermeier: Both ABM Greiffenberger and Kostal are experts in their respective core competencies. In practice, this means that we act as experts in the geared motor sector and contribute our drive solutions for machines, systems and mobile devices. Kostal contributes its in-depth industry experience and supplies user-friendly and networkable frequency inverters.

SCOPE: How does the customer benefit from the cooperation?
Dirk Fedder: The benefit for the customer is greater than the sum of the individual parts. Users save themselves the engineering effort. Each of the companies is a specialist in its own field. By pooling our expertise in mechanics and electronics, we work closely together to create an energy-efficient and reliable system solution.

Thanks to the perfectly coordinated product areas, we create added value for our customers. They also experience this expertise in communication with the two companies. The user is assigned a specific contact person who is responsible for all activities.

Lackermeier: From our point of view, performance is not only defined by torque, but above all by customer benefit. We want to offer the best technological solution for sustainable added value in every single project.

This results in robust and compact drive units. Thanks to our extensive industry experience in mechanics and electronics, the customer always receives the system solution that is optimally tailored to their application. Everything is engineered in Germany, from the development phase to series delivery. There is only one contact person for all questions. This ensures short communication channels and solution-oriented work. We also continue this strategy in the after-sales area.
