ABB at the SPS 2022

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Solutions for greater energy efficiency and productivity

ABB Motion is focusing on energy efficiency at the SPS. The ABB synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM) of efficiency class IE5 have up to 40 % lower energy losses compared to IE3 motors and 20 % lower losses compared to IE4 motors.

The SynRM and frequency inverter package is an ideal solution for motor retrofits. The IE5-SynRM has the same size as an IE2 asynchronous motor, so that mechanical modifications are not necessary and this motor is well suited as a replacement for conventional asynchronous motors. ABB is expanding its extensive range in this area with two new synchronous reluctance motors. High compactness is the key feature of the new IE5 SynRM with liquid cooling. The SynRMs with an output of 55 to 600 kW in sizes 200 to 315 are significantly more compact than IE3 asynchronous motors with the same output.

The new all-compatible Machinery Drive ACS180 expands the Machinery Drives family with a compact, robust and adaptable frequency inverter for machine builders. It features precise vector control for asynchronous and permanent magnet motors with an output of 0.25 to 22 kW. Other features include Modbus RTU communication, adaptive programming and functional safety (STO).
