Smart Seam Tracking function
Welding robot programs itself
At the Schweissen & Schneiden trade fair in Essen, Trumpf presented a robot for arc welding that calculates its own welding path. This is made possible by a smart sensor that automatically determines the welding points.
The company developed the "Smart Seam Tracking" technology together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA. This makes it easier for users to get started with automated arc welding and gives them a competitive edge. The sensor is located at the head of the welding torch and automatically determines the welding path for each component. All the user has to do is move the robot into the starting position and the technology does the rest. The robot automatically detects the welding path via the sensor, the software calculates the welding points without losing any time and creates the welding program for the component. The solution makes it easier for production employees to program the robot. Even with complex components such as spiral bends, the process only takes a few seconds, the manufacturer promises. What's more, employees do not need any specialist knowledge. The intuitive user interface can also be used to assign various welding tasks, such as counter layers or identical seams. The result is less waste, greater process stability and high quality.
