Special saw for additive manufacturing

Kasto Maschinenbau is presenting an innovative sawing concept for additive manufacturing at Formnext 2018: With the Kastowin amc, the company has designed a high-performance automatic band saw specifically for single cuts of additively manufactured components.

The saw is also part of the NextGenAM project, which aims to automate the entire process of industrial 3D printing. The Kastowin amc is specially designed to separate components made from easy to difficult-to-machine materials using additive manufacturing processes from their base plate. For this purpose, the band saw has a turning device with which the workpieces can be rotated by 180 degrees. The parts are processed upside down and therefore more safely: They cannot topple over or buckle after the cut, but fall into the designated collection container without being damaged. The base plate can be easily placed on the device using a crane or handling device and screwed on manually. A quick clamping system is also available as an option.

The Kastowin amc is fully enclosed to prevent harmful microparticles, which can be produced during the processing of additively manufactured components, from entering the ambient air. It also has a preparation for connecting an extraction system. The user enters the thickness of the base plate via the standard SmartControl control unit and the saw automatically cuts the components to the corresponding allowance. The result is an efficient, precise, tool-friendly and predictable sawing process.

With its innovative sawing concept, Kasto is also part of the NextGenAM project, which aims to automate additive manufacturing in the industrial environment. The initiators are the aviation supplier Premium Aerotec, the car manufacturer Daimler and the technology provider EOS. The aim of the project is to develop a complete system for the production of aluminum components for the automotive and aerospace industries. The Kastowin amc is being used as part of this project at the Varel Technology Center (TZV), where a pilot system for industrial 3D printing and post-processing was recently put into operation.
