Strengthening sustainability and market position with the Digital Product Passport

Increasing reporting obligations to authorities, rising energy prices and customer demands for improved resource and energy efficiency, proof ofCO2 emissions or even climate-neutral products and processes as a criterion for awarding contracts - challenges that companies of all sizes are already facing today or will be facing in the near future.

The already foreseeable political initiatives to promote the circular economy will further fuel these challenges in the future. The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is being discussed at a political level as a core element of the circular economy. This is intended to create the necessary database for a circular economy. In the foreseeable future, the Digital Product Passport will therefore become mandatory for the majority of products traded in the European Economic Area. In addition to the legal conformity that the Digital Product Passport enables, companies can also use the database created to increase their resource and energy efficiency and provide their customers with the necessaryCO2 certificates.

So far, however, there is still uncertainty and ambiguity in many areas regarding the implementation of these new requirements. In order to shed light on the situation, it is currently important for companies to gather experience and knowledge by analyzing their current situation and developing initial prototypes.

The August-Wilhelm Scheer Institute for Digital Products and Processes has carried out such a pilot project together with the company Robert Bosch for a selected product category. Among other things, the pilot project provided insights into the effort and accuracy of the data required for a digital product passport. The existing prototype can now be gradually increased in complexity and thus brought closer to the desired target image.
