Net zero emissions
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has confirmed that the science-based targets submitted by Flender to reduce greenhouse gas emissions comply with the SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standards and Guidelines.
SBTi is a corporate climate action organization that supports companies and financial institutions worldwide in doing their part to combat the climate crisis. They develop standards, tools and guidelines that enable companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets necessary to keep global warming below critical thresholds and reach net zero by 2050 at the latest.
SBTi has approved Flender's science-based net-zero emissions reduction targets. The German drive specialist is committed to reducing absolute GHG emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 63% by the 2030 financial year compared to the base year 2021 and reducing GHG emissions for Scope 3 per tonne of product sold by 51.6% over the same period.
Overall, Flender is committed to achieving net-zero GHG emissions along the entire value chain by the 2045 financial year. Specifically, this means a commitment to reduce absolute GHG emissions for Scope 1 and 2 by 90% by the 2045 financial year compared to the base year 2021. Flender is also committed to reducing GHG emissions for Scope 3 by 97% per tonne of product sold over the same period.
For the provider of technology-driven drive solutions, this is the next important step in its sustainability efforts. Previously, Flender had already been ranked among the top 1% of companies worldwide in the renowned EcoVadis ranking and received the German Sustainability Award 2024. In order to achieve its ambitious goals, Flender has firmly anchored Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in its corporate strategy and has been focusing on this topic for years. A large number of projects at all locations worldwide are aimed at reducing emissions.
At the Bocholt site, for example, the waste heat from the company's own hardening shop is used in a unique process to heat the site. Every year, Flender saves almost 2.4 million kilowatt hours of natural gas and emits 400 tons less CO2. The sites in North Rhine-Westphalia are supplied with green electricity from wind and solar parks in Germany via a power purchase agreement (PPA). Flender produces its own green electricity with photovoltaic systems at its sites in India and Germany and provides charging stations for electric vehicles worldwide, thereby promoting electrification.
"Despite all the current challenges and global crises, climate change is still one of the biggest threats to our planet. That's why we want to continue to be a pioneer for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in our industry. It is still possible to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C, but we are dangerously close to this threshold. I am very pleased that SBTi has approved our emissions reduction targets. It helps us and our partners to commit to science-based 1.5°C and net zero targets," says Flender CEO Andreas Evertz.
"We need rapid and deep emission cuts to halve global emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2045. The latest climate science from the IPCC - described by the UN as a "red alert for humanity" - is bitter proof of this. By setting ourselves ambitious targets, we want to do our part and strive for more in the future. I am proud that the global Flender team is behind these ambitions," says Kimberley ten Broeke, Head of CSR at Flender.
