Andreas Mühlbauer,

Functional hybrid reprocessing system

Together with the Saxon cooperation partners WTA Vogtland, Rhode + Wagner Anlagenbau and Innotas Elektronik, Fraunhofer IKTS has developed a functional hybrid water treatment system that can be hermetized for immersion applications.

In this system, ceramic microfiltration membranes in planar or tubular design, cellular ceramic structures coated with highly effective photocatalytic titanium dioxide and energy-efficient UV LEDs to stimulate the catalytic reaction are combined into a stack and integrated into continuously operated water treatment plants. The compact system works completely chemical-free, is self-cleaning and enables the separation of particulate-bound pollutants with simultaneous sterile filtration. Organic trace substances are completely broken down by oxidation in the downstream photocatalysis zone. Compared to conventional UV lamps, UV LEDs enable targeted irradiation in the defined target wave range, which means that the degradation effect can be tailored to the respective application. A scalable stack system has been developed by integrating the LEDs on ceramic boards with high thermal conductivity and long-term stability. Laboratory tests with model waters and municipal wastewater confirm the suitability of the stack system for the removal of active pharmaceutical ingredients and pathogenic microorganisms. The modular system can be used both at the point-of-use as the last treatment step before consumption or at the point-of-emission for the treatment of organically contaminated municipal and industrial wastewater.
