Schaeffler honored for OriginCheckApp

The automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler was honored at the Bavarian State Chancellery as the winner of the "Landmarks in the Land of Ideas 2018" competition, a location initiative of the German government and German industry.

The focus of the award was the "OriginCheck App", which uses the oneIDentity+ cloud service platform to check the authenticity of Schaeffler products. With the "OriginCheck App", buyers of INA and FAG products, such as rolling bearings, can quickly and easily carry out an initial authenticity check and, in the event of suspicions, easily initiate further steps for clear clarification. According to the jury, the app thus combats product piracy and increases protection against counterfeit, potentially defective products for the benefit of the general public.

Over 700 suspected cases of counterfeit products already investigated in 2017

The basis for the check is the unique identification of the Schaeffler packaging with data matrix codes (DMC) in accordance with the GS1 standard, which identify the product worldwide without overlapping, as well as the associated "OriginCheck App". The user scans the DMC and receives immediate feedback as to whether it is a code that is stored in the oneIDentity+ cloud service platform and is marked as valid. In the event of suspicion, the app supports the creation of suitable photo documentation of the product to be checked, which is sent directly from the app by email to the Brand Protection Team, the central unit for combating product and brand piracy at Schaeffler. The DMC code is stored in the cloud service platform of TecAlliance subsidiary oneIDentity+. The oneIDentity+ database currently contains over 2 billion product codes, mostly from the automotive aftermarket. In 90 countries worldwide, the authenticity verification specialist records queries relating to products, machines and systems from a wide range of user groups such as workshops, customs, service and logistics employees.

"The oneIDentity+ service platform enables us to provide our unique DMC codes centrally and globally. Thanks to the flexible deployment and expansion options, we can integrate further services in addition to securing our products and thus see ourselves as being ideally equipped to meet the future challenges of digitalization," says Ingrid Bichelmeir-Böhn, Head of the Global Brand Protection Team at Schaeffler, describing the benefits of using oneIDentity+.

Goods with a purchase value of around 5 million euros seized

In 2017, Schaeffler checked over 700 suspected cases that were reported via the OriginCheck app, among other things. Worldwide, goods with a total dealer purchase value of five million euros were seized and destroyed under supervision. The app gives end customers and retailers the opportunity to better assess their sources for security-relevant components and provides increasing support in locating counterfeit suppliers. On the occasion of the award ceremony, Dr. Daniel Dünnebacke, COO of oneIDentity+, conveyed his congratulations: "We congratulate Schaeffler on winning the award as part of the federal government's location initiative and are delighted that we were able to play our part in this success." The "OriginCheck" app is one of a total of 100 ideas selected as part of "Landmarks in the Land of Ideas 2018".
