Graepel grille for new McLaren

Since spring 2021, the world has been amazed by the first super sports car with hybrid drive, the new Artura from McLaren.

It impresses with its "small" V6 engine, whose enormous power and efficiency is also thanks to Graepel. The Löningen-based company developed various air grilles that are required for the ventilation of the 680 hp engine.

The supplier initially threw a spanner in the works: their initial design envisaged a construction that could not be physically realized. Graepel's engineering team got to work: one assembly was redesigned with fewer elements, another was cold-formed as a single part. This was a real benefit for the customer, saving costs and installation time.

McLaren equips the Artura with six different graepel grilles made of sheet steel. These are galvanized and finished with a temperature-resistant powder coating. Their construction is technically more challenging than is often assumed, as the components not only have to meet the highest strength requirements, but also be lightweight and offer a maximum free cross-section. In addition, appearance plays a major role in premium vehicles such as the Artura. Graepel's hexagonal embossing and high-quality finishing in the company's own surface treatment plant ensure an appropriate appearance.

The Artura is not only the first McLaren with an electric motor, but also the first with a V6 combustion engine. Previously, the company relied solely on large V8 engines. However, the transformation seems to have been a success: the car catapults itself to 100 km/h in 3 seconds and consumes only 5.5 liters of premium gasoline according to the standard.

With the new order, Graepel has demonstrated its expertise in being able to compete in the top automotive field. For the sheet metal specialist, McLaren is the third victory in a row, so to speak: the Artura marks the highlight in Graepel's sports car division in the 2021 production year. In 2020, the Corvette C8 from General Motors was in the spotlight, in 2019 the Honda NSX.

All development and production is carried out in-house, including in-house prototyping and toolmaking. With this comprehensive range of services, the company has already been able to establish itself with manufacturers of commercial vehicles, construction machinery, buses, trains and agricultural machinery.
