Using Dow Chemical as an example, Nokia and Kyndryl present a case study for scaling private mobile networks in the complex area of Industry 4.0. At the Freeport site, one of the most extensive factory sites in the world, more than 40 individual plants cover around 50 km². There, the partners rely on a proprietary mobile network that connects employees throughout the site to central systems. Smart devices and electronic forms make documentation processes in plant maintenance more user-friendly, productive and secure. In addition to Dow Chemical, Nokia and Kyndryl jointly support more than 100 globally operating companies in 24 countries. Their services range from consulting, testing and piloting to complete implementations of reliable and secure private wireless networks, both in the 5G and Long Term Evolution (LTE) standards.

Google and Kyndryl jointly presented examples of how digital transformation can succeed in the manufacturing sector. The providers used specific use cases from Carrefour, Hites (one of Chile's largest retailers) and GPA (Brazil's largest food retailer) to illustrate how supply chains can be protected against disruption. Another example demonstrated how Kyndryl implemented a network edge solution for I4.0 data supported by artificial intelligence at a Turkish glass manufacturer in collaboration with Google.

Together with partner VMware, Kyndryl demonstrated the potential of computing in operation (OT) at remote locations using the predictive maintenance of wind farms. Data from thermal imaging cameras on the turbines is processed locally. VMware's edge computing platform uses algorithms based on artificial intelligence and machine learning to proactively detect problems. This is intended to increase safety and reduce the downtime of wind turbines.
