Analysis systems

Mara Hofacker,

New solutions for gear measurement

At the Control trade fair, Gleason Corporation will be presenting two analysis systems that are designed to open up new possibilities for gear testing: the 300GMSL multi-sensor gear testing system and the GRSL double flank gear tester with integrated laser technology.

The versatile platform of the Gleason 300GMSL gear measuring system offers classic tactile measurement for checking conventional gear data on spur and helical gears as well as spur, spiral and hypoid bevel gears with a diameter of up to 300 mm. In addition, the new measuring system enables non-contact scanning of tooth flanks using laser technology to support gear development. According to the company, comprehensive topography data can be captured much faster than with conventional tactile probing - with comparable results - depending on the surface of the gearing.

The integration of laser scanning and associated 3D graphics with CAD interface extends both the functionality and the range of applications of this machine platform. This new laser option makes the 300GMSL suitable for research and development applications, both for prototypes and series parts or when reverse engineering is required. Other options include surface roughness testing or Barkhausen roughness analysis to check for grinding burn.

The 300GMSL gear measuring system is also ideal for rapid measurement of gear topography in regular production operations and meets the increasingly stringent requirements for gear testing. Accordingly, soft materials (e.g. plastic gears) can be inspected without damage. The multi-sensor technology in a single machine platform reduces operating costs, annual maintenance and calibration costs and ultimately space requirements.

The GRSL double flank gear tester with integrated laser technology enables in-process testing of gears and sets a new standard when fast and large-volume testing is required. It enables both double flank gear testing and analytical pitch and profile measurement on all teeth in a matter of seconds.

This new technology is available in manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic configurations, depending on customer requirements. The pitch and profile measurements are analyzed using GAMA (Gleason Automated Measurement and Analysis) software, which provides operators with the same industry standard presentation of protocols as an analytical measurement on a gear measuring machine. With GAMA, over fifty analysis packages are available for customers with all major industry standards such as AGMA, DIN, ISO etc. as well as customized guidelines developed specifically for the GAMA platform.

This patent-pending design is unparalleled in terms of inspection speed and capability. It measures external gears with a diameter of up to 250 mm in a range from module 0.4 to 7.2. A dual monitor execution option provides an easy overview of the current trends of consecutive high-speed measurements - while one monitor displays the measurement results of several hundred workpieces tested over a period of time, the other monitor displays the results of the current test piece in real time.

All GMSL and GRSL systems, as well as the entire GMS product line, are capable of exporting measurement data using the closed loop function. Closed loop functionality has been used in bevel gear production for many years and was implemented by Gleason for cylindrical gear production a few years ago. The closed loop allows a measurement system to send results directly to a Gleason production machine such as a power skiving machine, generating grinding machine or honing machine to initiate automatic correction of the machine tool without human intervention.

In addition to the measuring systems on display, high-precision LeCount expanding mandrels will also be exhibited, which have been specially developed for metrology applications to ensure high precision and efficiency of measurement. Gleason will also present its range of master wheels for testing and inspection applications, offering comprehensive solutions from a single source.
