Fine dust sensor: resistant to soiling

Sensirion, manufacturer of digital microsensors, presents the SPS30 particulate matter sensor (PM sensor).

Laser light scattering is combined with the latest technology against particle contamination to achieve maximum precision over a long period of time. This technology, together with high-quality and durable components, enables accurate measurements - from the first use to a lifetime of more than eight years, according to the company. In addition, Sensirion 's latest algorithms offer high accuracy for different PM types and high-resolution particle size binning. This opens up new possibilities for the detection of different types of environmental dust and other particles. Measuring only 41 × 41 × 12 mm3, the SPS30 is suitable for applications where a compact design is important, such as wall-mounted devices or compact air quality indicators.

The natural deposition of fine dust in conventional PM sensors leads to a constant deterioration in signal quality. Deposits on all optical components such as the light source (laser or LED) and the photodetector are particularly critical. As a result, devices that integrate these PM sensors stop working properly after some time, leading to malfunctions, user complaints, maintenance, service and/or replacement parts. According to Sensirion, the patented contamination resistance technology and durable components give the SPS30 robustness, long-term stability and high accuracy with a lifetime of more than eight years in continuous operation with 24 hours/day use. The sensor is available worldwide through Sensirion's distribution network.
