Decline in sales and poorer order situation

The AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement (AMA) has surveyed its approximately 450 members on economic development in the second quarter. According to the survey, the industry generated an 8% drop in sales in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter.

It is interesting to note that large and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) show a similar turnover trend, although expectations differ. While SMEs had predicted a 14% drop in turnover in the first quarter, they generated a less negative result than expected at minus 8%.

For the current quarter, SMEs are expecting a decline of 3%. The large companies expected a decline of three percent and now have to cope with a fall in turnover of 9 percent. For the third quarter, large companies are expecting a drop of 1%.

Development of the most important sales markets

The sales markets of sensor and measurement technology companies also developed differently in the second quarter. Only sales to the building and heating, ventilation and air conditioning sector showed a positive trend. Medical technology recorded slight declines overall.

Suppliers to the heavily sensor-driven automotive, mobility, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering sectors suffered the sharpest declines in sales. Expectations for the current quarter are also significantly gloomier in these sectors. By contrast, suppliers to the semiconductor and medical technology sectors and their own sensor and measurement technology sector are confident.

"The entire German economy experienced a significant decline in economic output in the first half of the year," says Thomas Simmons, AMA Managing Director. "Subsequently, this development is also dragging the sensor and measurement technology sector into a downward trend. Weak demand from abroad is also flanking this sales trend. It is not yet possible to quantify how severe the slump will be for sensor and measurement technology manufacturers."
