Wibu-Systems introduces highly available license server

At the Hannover Messe, Wibu-Systems presented the newly developed CodeMeter Triple Mode Redundancy (TMR) server, which ensures high availability. The powerful server allows uninterrupted license usage even during license updates. Server failures or license usage peaks in networks no longer mean interruptions.

CodeMeter, Wibu-Systems' technology for protection, licensing and security, provides software manufacturers and manufacturers of intelligent devices with 23 different license models. One of these license models is the high-availability license, for which the user uses a redundant license server based on the 2-out-of-3 concept. This ensures the availability of the protected software if a license server fails.

The new solution is characterized by the fact that the entire TMR system runs as a single network. The complex architecture ensures high availability as well as protection and security against license fraud. With the CodeMeter TMR server, users can rely on their own data center with a proven, permanent configuration of five servers that can be operated as virtual machines. Three license servers work in a network. As long as two of these three servers are available, users can use the licenses.

A newly developed, duplicate TMR server is provided as an interface to the clients, which can be accessed by the clients under a virtual IP address.
Each license is provided with a special identifier, the TMR ID. The three different license containers, the CmContainers for the license servers, are generated with CodeMeter License Central just as easily as any other license. The TMR network then connects hardware-based or software-based CmContainers with the same ID to form a virtual CmContainer.

The two TMR servers currently run on Linux. Behind them are three CodeMeter servers that can be operated under Linux or Windows. The CodeMeter licenses are only available on the downstream TMR servers. This means that no user can access the licenses directly. A potential attacker who only has a CmContainer with a single TMR license cannot use the TMR license. The CodeMeter server refuses to use a single license with a TMR ID unless it is used correctly within the TMR system.

David Paine, Product Manager for CmCloud and CodeMeter License Central, explains: "In sectors such as the automotive industry, a lack of licenses would bring important production lines to a standstill or slow down development departments. That's why users demand and expect highly available licenses. When using our CodeMeter TMR server, users can rely on available licenses, even if a single server should fail. The TMR network is a compact architecture that can be set up quickly and securely. Software manufacturers do not have to adapt their software, but simply use the new high-availability license. This is easy with our latest CodeMeter License Central or our high-level programming API."
