Surge protection for electromobility

The electric car market is growing exponentially and car manufacturers are increasingly focusing on electromobility. Surge protection is also part of this technology.

The charging stations and wallboxes are high-quality and highly complex systems that need to be permanently available. A surge protection concept provides the necessary protection for both the charging station and the connected electric car against surges caused by lightning strikes and switching operations on the grid.

The power supply is protected with the new Valvetrab EV surge arresters from Phoenix Contact, which have been specially developed for e-mobility. The new product family consists of a type 1+2 combined arrester and a type 2 surge arrester. Both variants are available with an optional remote signaling contact. The plugs enable simple insulation measurement and are mechanically coded. This prevents the plugs from being accidentally mixed up. Sensitive components, e.g. for Ethernet communication or the operating panel, are protected with suitable type 3 surge arresters for the integrated protection concept. These devices are already available in the Phoenix Contact product portfolio and work together with the new VAL-EV.
