Industrial Application Hosting Platform
Platform for cybersecurity
Siemens has added a new, more powerful version of the Ruggedcom APE (Application Processing Engine) to its Ruggedcom multiservice platform product family of rugged communication devices. It is an industrial application hosting platform on which manufacturer-independent software applications can be executed in harsh and mission-critical environments.
The Ruggedcom APE1808 is part of the Ruggedcom RX15xx family of ruggedized Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches and routers. This modular platform with field-replaceable modules offers a choice of WAN, serial and Ethernet options. It is suitable for power generation and distribution, railroad applications and traffic engineering. As a module, the Ruggedcom APE1808 can be plugged directly into any Ruggedcom RX1500 multiservice platform device to utilize the platform's integrated switching and routing capabilities. Ruggedcom APE1808 provides a Gigabit Ethernet connection at the front of the device and another equivalent but completely separate connection to the backplane of the RX15xx.
Ruggedcom APE is optionally available with a protective coating (conformal coating) and can be operated at ambient temperatures from minus 40 to plus 75 degrees Celsius. It meets all the electrical specifications of the Ruggedcom RX15xx platform, i.e. the IEC61850-3 and IEEE 1613 standards for industrial operation in harsh environments. Based on Intel Quad Core, x86_64 architecture with support for Linux and Windows 10, the Ruggedcom APE1808 provides a standards-based platform for off-the-shelf software, enabling partnerships with industry leaders in cybersecurity.
The new Ruggedcom APE1808 offers advantages for applications such as firewalls, analysis software for network load and logs or sensors for intrusion detection systems. It can analyze data directly at the source - without the additional effort of installing an external industrial PC. The Ruggedcom APE1808 and cybersecurity solutions are designed for applications such as power generation and distribution, transportation and oil and gas, but can also be used in any harsh industrial environment to protect networks from a growing number of attacks.
Ruggedcom's cybersecurity solution portfolio provides access to various advanced cybersecurity applications developed through a partnership with Fortinet, Nozomi Networks, Secure-NOK and Claroty. The collaboration focuses on advancing the security of industrial networks against emerging cybersecurity challenges. The following solutions will be made available on the Ruggedcom Multiservice platform with jointly certified partner applications from Fortinet, Nozomi Networks, Secure-NOK and Claroty: Intrusion Detection System (IDS), Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), Next Generation Firewall (NGFW). as
