Daniel Schilling,

Prevent mistakes in advance ...

... is better than repairing damage. Predictive maintenance is therefore one of the drivers of digital transformation in the manufacturing industry.

Networking is important, but more important are computing power and intelligent, adaptive algorithms at the edge, on the machine - and technology is developing rapidly in this area. Edge computing directly on the machine is therefore becoming ever cheaper and more powerful, bringing it within reach for more and more tasks.

In our focus on "Predictive maintenance and machine learning" in the July issue of INDUSTRIAL Production, we take a look at the topic from various angles. We look at industrial valves in the ultra-pure water circuit (page 10), the use of the digital twin (page 12) and how data analysis can be used to create optimal, predictive maintenance concepts (page 16). If you continue reading, you will notice that the topic also runs through the reports and articles in the specialist sections.

The health situation in Germany now looks more hopeful and I will have the opportunity to visit companies and attend real face-to-face events for the first time in 16 months. Without real human contact with partners and customers, something is missing in business life - despite hundreds of video conferences.

As a publishing house, we are taking a two-pronged approach to our next major event, to which I would like to cordially invite you: our Modern Assembly Congress. Over two days, on October 5 and 6, it will also focus on the two core topics that are currently moving the industry: the digital networking of the assembly station in the production chain and the introduction of robotics, especially cobots, at assembly workstations. Participation will be possible both online via a congress platform and in person at Motek in Stuttgart (page 21).

I hope you enjoy reading this issue!
