Security...
...dear readers, is a much-discussed topic these days. Let's remember the Advent season, for example, when the Christmas markets were protected by huge concrete bollards.
Video surveillance in public spaces, where facial recognition has also arrived, is somewhat less tangible but still present. The Federal Police have been testing the use of automated facial recognition systems at Berlin's Südkreuz station since August 2017. This is not without controversy; critics speak of a move towards a surveillance state that not even George Orwell could have imagined, and data protectionists question the legal basis for such facial recognition technology.
Data protection is also an important topic in the industrial environment, especially in times of Industry 4.0. "Data is the lifeblood of Industry 4.0," says Christian Wolf, Managing Director of Turck, which is why the importance of IT and software in automation technology is constantly growing. In this issue's special, we focus on this important area of identification and security. In addition to IT security, the clear identification of parts and products is becoming increasingly important as automation increases. Vision systems, scanners and printers are used and end-to-end identification technology is used for material flow control and product traceability.
Predictive maintenance has also become an integral part of Industry 4.0: sensors detect the condition of the machine by measuring vibration, temperature or humidity, maintenance software evaluates the data and detects possible component failure. Human-robot collaboration also relies on safety systems - workspaces are monitored and forces, speeds and travel distances are measured.
I wish you an exciting read and send you my best regards,
Yours
