How do you plan an ergonomic workstation? How is Diagonal Brace Set 8 fitted to item aluminum profiles? These and other questions about products and specialist topics from the field of industrial production are now answered by item in the item Academy. Customers, partners and employees benefit from the new e-learning portal: compact knowledge is conveyed in an easily understandable way within a short space of time. Users worldwide can choose between online training and product manuals. There is also an overview of venues and dates for classroom training. Simply register and off you go.

Flexible time management - savings on travel costs - short learning sequences: E-learning is a useful addition to traditional methods of knowledge transfer. item is now offering free web-based training in the areas of mechanical engineering, workplace design, automation and lean production. The main topics and content are constantly being revised and expanded. The target group of the item Academy are specialists and junior staff who want to receive practical training. After registering on the item website, interested parties can use the offer directly and also access all other item online services without having to register again. The only requirement is a device that has access to the Internet and an HTML5-capable browser. item uses the open source software ILIAS to prepare and present the learning content. "The ILIAS learning management system offers an ideal basis for processing topics flexibly and adapting them to country-specific differences," says Joel Hesse, Project Manager at item. "Our item Academy is currently available in six languages and can therefore be accessed by a wide range of users worldwide."

Learning by doing

The item Academy is divided into the areas of online training and product instructions. The online training courses summarize basic information in an easy-to-understand way and are divided into several chapters. Users can complete all parts of the course or select individual chapters. Theoretical knowledge transfer alternates with practical and interactive sections. The product instructions show how to assemble and process item components in just a few minutes. This provides fitters with direct support when carrying out their work. Ideally, they can follow the individual steps on site at their industrial workplace.

A look into the future

In future, item wants to focus more on blended learning. "We see great potential in this combination of e-learning and face-to-face training," explains Joel Hesse. "If the registered users complete the online training course at our item Academy before the on-site training course, they enter the face-to-face training course at a completely different level." This compensates for the different prior knowledge of several participants, for example, and the face-to-face phases can be used more intensively for practical exercises or to clarify questions.

The item Academy has been online since the beginning of May 2019. At Motek 2019 in Stuttgart (October 7 to 10), item will be presenting its new e-learning module to the public at stand 3103 in hall 3.
