Safety cabinet for lithium-ion batteries
Asecos, an expert in the storage and handling of hazardous substances, is presenting the new ION-LINE ULTRA safety storage cabinet at the A+A trade fair in Düsseldorf.
This is the first safety storage cabinet from asecos to be tested and approved in accordance with the strict GS test standard EK5/AK4 for lithium storage cabinets. The cabinet for the active and passive storage of lithium-ion batteries not only impresses with its new cabinet design, but also with its improved safety concept.
Lithium-ion batteries are indispensable today, but due to their high energy density they pose a high risk of fire with major damage consequences. The GS test principle EK5/AK4 22-01 was developed to take this potential risk into account. It clearly and independently defines a test standard for safety storage cabinets for the active and passive storage of lithium-ion batteries. Safety storage cabinets that have undergone a complete test and subsequent certification in accordance with these principles are suitable for the storage of new or used batteries and are marked with the GS seal.
Maximum fire protection
The ION-LINE ULTRA guarantees double protection in the event of fire, as required by the GS test: It offers 90 minutes of fire resistance from the outside in and from the inside out. While 90-minute fire protection has long been a matter of course for the storage of hazardous substances, this high level of protection has now also become established for batteries. In order to determine the fire resistance of the ION-LINE-ULTRA cabinet, a fire test was carried out from the outside to the inside in accordance with DIN EN 14470-1:2004-07, but under significantly more stringent conditions. The temperature increase inside the cabinet must not exceed 100 Kelvin after 90 minutes - for comparison: 180 Kelvin when storing flammable liquids. This prevents the risk of thermal runaway of the stored batteries in case of fire.
of the stored batteries is prevented. As lithium-ion batteries themselves pose a major fire risk, the GS test principle requires that products for storing batteries guarantee a 90-minute room closure. If a fire breaks out in the ION-ULTRA cabinet, there is no danger to the immediate surroundings for 90 minutes. The fire test is carried out in accordance with DIN EN 1363-2:1999-10.
Another new feature of the GS-certified cabinet is its smoke-tightness. The entire cabinet construction has been designed in such a way that, in the event of a battery fire, the smoke gas produced can be
out of the cabinet. Even if the supply or exhaust air openings are automatically closed in the event of a fire, the cabinet enables a defined pressure reduction and safe smoke extraction via a pressure relief flap in the head section. The design has been optimized for maximum safety and ergonomics. The storage and retrieval of batteries is more convenient thanks to a 10-second door open hold and automatic door closure. Both cabinet doors can be opened with a single door handle and the permanent two-point locking system meets GS test requirements.
New security concept
Charging lithium-ion batteries generates heat, which increases the hazard potential of the batteries. For this reason, the GS test for lithium cabinets requires proof of heating in accordance with DIN EN 61439. This certificate must prove that no temperatures above 60 degrees arise in the cabinet over a period of 12 hours. In the ION ULTRA, the charging heat is dissipated from the cabinet as required via a temperature-controlled fan. Sensors continuously monitor
continuously monitor the temperature of the exhaust air flow and the fan speed is adjusted as the temperature rises. In addition to heat, the new ION-ULTRA cabinets also detect smoke and immediately signal the alarm differentiation on the cabinet housing required by GS test principles by means of an LED light with flashing function and color change. This allows the user to recognize the type of danger at an early stage without having to open the cabinet.
Each cabinet is factory-equipped with a potential-free alarm contact that sends warning messages to a control center in the event of damage. The cabinet can be evacuated to the outside thanks to the base that can be driven under. This minimizes damage to property and personal injury. At this year's A+A in Düsseldorf, the company will be showcasing the entire
revised ION-LINE range.
