Warehouse, order picking and intralogistics

handling award for versatile overhead conveyor technology

With the SSI Carrier pocket conveyor, SSI Schaefer has further expanded its product portfolio for e-commerce and multichannel distribution, taking first place in the warehousing, order picking and intralogistics category of the handling award.

The modular SSI Carrier combines five functions in one drive system: transporting, accumulating, distributing, buffering and sorting. With a throughput of up to 10,000 load carriers per hour, the pocket sorter can be used universally for goods weighing up to three kilograms. The heart of the system is the primary load carrier, an internal roller adapter into which - depending on requirements - various secondary load carriers such as clothes hangers or bags are hung.

The carrier is controlled by the entire system using an RFID transponder that links the goods to the carrier. The accuracy and error prevention of RFID technology ensure the reliability and process safety of the system.

The recirculating conveyor connects the logistics modules of a system and, as a means of transportation, supports the overcoming of horizontal and vertical conveyor sections. The powered accumulation conveyor transports, accumulates, separates, sorts and buffers the load carriers on horizontal sections. Thanks to the drive and the avoidance of inclines, the accumulation conveyor enables very gentle transportation of the products in the pockets. Diverters serve as branching elements, for example between circulation and accumulation conveyors, in storage carousels, in the matrix sorter or as infeed and outfeed at workstations.

The system is very economical as a dynamic returns buffer, for example. The returned and checked goods are recorded, placed in a bag and stored directly in the dynamic buffer for immediate sale. The goods are then transferred to the batch buffer and are immediately ready for reshipment.

A matrix sorter is used to sort the load carriers in order to generate customer orders from the batches in an orderly sequence. The sophisticated, user-friendly software and control technology from SSI Schaefer rounds off this overhead conveyor system. With state-of-the-art visualization technology and optimum interfaces to customer systems, it can be seamlessly integrated into any type of warehouse.

The carrier runs smoothly and stably; at just 20 millimetres long, the adapter is around ten percent smaller than existing systems on the market. This means that up to ten percent more carriers can be buffered over the same distance. Another key element is the patented concept of the driven accumulation conveyor. The horizontal arrangement allows optimum space utilization with a compact and individual steel structure - even in multi-storey constructions.

The SSI carrier system also ensures process reliability thanks to the recirculation of the load carriers. A continuous chain creates a circulation option so that the conveyors do not have to stop in the event of an unexpectedly blocked line. The load carriers remain in the respective conveyor until they arrive at their destination again. pb
