Dematic installs first robot picking system
Dematic delivers the world's first robotic order picking system in Australia, moving it from the beta phase to live operation.
The intralogistics specialist is installing its Piece Picking Module robot in the new distribution center of food retailer Drakes Supermarkets in Edinburgh North. The robotic arm automates the picking process there. It independently selects individual items and transports them to the designated bins. This is intended to increase both accuracy and productivity, thereby speeding up the entire order processing process.
In order to ensure high productivity and efficiency within the distribution center, the food retailer is integrating the Rapidpick goods-to-person picking system from Dematic and the Multishuttle buffer and sequencing system in addition to the Piece Picking Module robot. The system automatically picks all goods-to-person-capable foodstuffs according to the order list and places them in the designated containers.
Terry Jamieson, Business Development Manager at Dematic, also explains the benefits of the solution for Drakes Supermarkets: "In addition to the usual high safety and quality standards, the system meets the customer's specific requirements and enables high throughput rates, which are particularly important in the highly competitive food sector." Compared to manual picking, the robotic arm increases the efficiency of the picking process and thus speeds up the entire order processing. This not only increases picking accuracy, but also reduces labor costs.
Drakes Supermarkets is one of Australia's largest independent food retailers. The new distribution center, which cost around 70 million euros, is located on a 17-hectare site and is expected to create up to 550 new jobs. With the go-live, the robotic Piece Picking Module is now available to the entire market, and the next robotic system is already being planned in Malaysia. as
