Beumer installs largest parcel sorting system in New Zealand
The automatic parcel sorting system from Beumer has been in operation at the freight terminal of the New Zealand courier network Freightways at Christchurch Airport since fall 2017. It can sort up to 15,000 items per hour.
In fall 2017, Beumer installed the largest parcel sorting system in New Zealand. It is in use at the distribution center of parcel service provider Freightways at Christchurch Airport on the east coast. "The system has fundamentally changed our network," explains John Charles, National Operations Manager at Freightways. "It enabled us to make a record number of deliveries during the peak Christmas period." The parcel service provider is thus able to perform better and better compared to the previous year thanks to the increasing number of deliveries to its large customer base in New Zealand.
The basis is the LS-4000CB series crossbelt sorter, which can handle up to 15,000 items per hour. Freightways handles a wide range of items: from wine cartons to fresh fish in polystyrene containers. "Freightways needed an automated sorting system that could handle the widest possible range of parcels quickly and safely," explains Stephen Clark, Area Sales Manager for Logistics Systems at Beumer, "It is important that the goods are handled gently to minimize the number of unsortable items."
The automation of the material flow makes it possible to integrate several Freightways brands into one operation. This is important as the Freightways Group is New Zealand's largest independent courier network, combining seven different courier services under one roof. Thanks to the sorter's high speed and performance, the company is ideally positioned to keep pace with predicted growth, particularly in e-commerce, over the next 15 years. as
