Four-point bearing

Rodriguez provides light in the lighthouse

Rodriguez ball bearing slewing rings can also be found in many unusual applications: For example, a high-performance four-point bearing from the specialist was chosen for the refurbishment of a lighthouse floodlight on the Shetland island of Bressay.

Quality, resilience and a short delivery time: these were the requirements for the bearing technology that was to be used in the lamp of the lighthouse in Bressay. The market-leading marine technology specialist Ocean Kinetics turned to R.A. Rodriguez (U.K.) for help. "Our British partner recommended a KDL-U series non-geared ball bearing slewing ring," explains Martin Stremmel, Product Manager at Rodriguez. "These are four-point bearings in flange design, which are also suitable for the toughest operating conditions."

The robust slewing ring with an outer diameter of 948 millimetres was delivered within two weeks and now replaces the old system, which no longer met today's technical standards and safety regulations: "The lighthouse's original lamp dates back to 1858 and consisted of a mercury-filled basin in which the light floated to allow almost frictionless rotation," explains John Henderson, founder and Managing Director of Ocean Kinetics. "This allowed a very lightweight clockwork mechanism to be used to rotate the light."

The challenge was to replace the mercury and ensure a continuous, even movement of the light despite the "difficult" conditions - the rotating part of the lamp weighs several hundred kilograms. The Rodriguez ball bearing slewing ring is suitable for this application: it could be successfully mounted in the slightly curved basin above the base and, thanks to its good workmanship, ensures optimum rotation.

Robust and economical four-point bearings from Rodriguez are used in numerous applications and even under difficult operating conditions. They can safely support axial and radial loads as well as tilting moments. The bearings are available with internal or external toothing as well as without toothing. The components are easy to install and particularly suitable for high-precision applications - for example in the aviation industry or in special machine construction. as
