Components for dosing systems
Precisely dosed
BioFluidix, manufacturer of liquid handling devices and dosing modules, uses components from Item for the construction of its automation systems: profiles, connection technology and fastening elements as well as linear units with recirculating ball bearing guides, guide rails and carriages.
BioFluidix specializes in the development, manufacture and customization of automated liquid handling devices and dosing modules. These enable the contact-free dispensing of liquids in the volume range from a few picoliters to several microliters. BioFluidix was founded in 2005 as a spin-off of the Institute of Microsystems Engineering at the University of Freiburg (IMTEK) and currently employs 24 people. The specialists in the field of microfluidics and automation technology develop high-end systems, mainly for the life sciences, pharmaceutical production, medical technology and substrate and surface coating solutions sectors. The patented dosing technologies are used wherever precision and reliability are required.
In addition to single-channel dosing modules, BioFluidix also offers the combination of different dosing systems on an automated work platform - the BioSpot Workstation. "We enable our customers to

implementation of miniaturized and optimized processes and thus offer time and cost savings," explains the technical director of BioFluidix. "In order to be able to combine different processes and technologies, we needed a suitable setup and a corresponding platform - this is where Item comes in." BioFluidix uses a wide range of Item components: Profiles and connection technology to build the dosing systems as well as other elements for protective covers and housings. The company also relies on Item linear technology to operate the BioSpot workstation. The PS 4-15 recirculating ball bearing guide rail and the PS 4-15 recirculating ball bearing carriage are used.
BioFluidix has been working closely with Item since it was founded. "We were already in contact when we were still affiliated with the university," reports the Technical Director. "Even back then, we were impressed by the ability to use the components flexibly." In the field of protective housings, for example, this is a major advantage over prefabricated, non-configurable machine cabins in a standard format. With fixed formats, you quickly reach economic limits when it comes to meeting customer-specific requirements. BioFluidix was looking for a more individual solution without restrictions that could be implemented within an attractive delivery time and at competitive prices. By using item components, many designs can be realized in a short time and extensions can be easily implemented. The modular system enables BioFluidix to react quickly and flexibly to customer requirements.
The BioSpot Workstation enables the combination of different dosing technologies on one automated platform to realize a wide range of applications. Depending on the customer's wishes, the devices are individually constructed and adapted to the corresponding requirements. The supporting and functional elements of the system consist of item profiles. BioFluidix is increasingly using the aluminum profiles from the X series, as they meet customer requirements in terms of appearance and function. Thanks to their closed surfaces with the smallest possible edge radius, the profiles enable smooth, seamless connections.
Load-bearing and functional elements of the system consist of item profiles.
Linear technology from Item is used to move the dosing units. The PS 4-20 recirculating ball bearing guides are used for this. These consist of guide rails, which are mounted on grooved profiles, and the matching recirculating ball bearing guide carriages. The dosing unit of the BioSpot Workstation is mounted on the PS 4-20 carriages and is guided safely and precisely during the dosing process. The item components are characterized by high load-bearing capacity and rigidity combined with a compact design. BioFluidix manufactures the BioSpot Workstation with different dimensions, whereby the width is fixed at 55 centimetres and the length varies depending on customer requirements. The guide rails of the recirculating ball bearing guide and the associated components are therefore customized. "With the help of Item's modular system, the individual systems can be produced economically," explains the project manager at BioFluidix. "This means that our models can be parameterized and we can guarantee consistent functionality and quality."
BioFluidix relies on Item components not only for the construction of the BioSpot workstation. The Freiburg-based company also uses profiles, connection technology and fastening elements from the manufacturer for customized systems and plants that require a completely unique design. BioFluidix develops and integrates various components, sensors and control concepts to create customized solutions on demand. "The decisive factor is that we can use the item components to very quickly develop and implement the perfect devices in the dimensions defined by the customer," says the project manager. "We use the option of ordering the parts pre-configured via the Item website."
While BioFluidix initially had the components processed by an intermediate supplier, the company soon realized that this additional step was unnecessary. Item provides profiles with extremely precise cuts directly via the online store. All tolerances are adhered to so that BioFluidix can manufacture the devices immediately after receiving the parts. The profiles are selected and designed using the Item engineering tool. BioFluidix transfers the 3D data for the appropriate configuration into its own CAD environment and orders the prefabricated kits directly online.

"It is easy and convenient to purchase the components via the online store instead of having to send an order by email, enter the parts list and tolerances and then negotiate the price," reports the project manager. Orders are placed via an online account set up for BioFluidix. All conditions and agreements are stored there, which results in fast and reliable order processing. Item therefore provides a smart solution for all design variants. The entire process, from ordering to receiving the prefabricated components, only takes a few days. As BioFluidix produces "build-to-order" and does not keep any stock, the company relies on components being delivered on time. "In Item, we have found a partner that delivers quickly and reliably," emphasizes the Technical Director of BioFluidix. "In our many years of cooperation, there have been neither failures nor complaints."
The large modular system with the variety of compatible components is a clear competitive advantage of Item. The X series profiles are also suitable for special areas of application with particular requirements. For example, the largely closed surfaces offer a major advantage in cleanroom applications, as no dirt can penetrate and the surfaces are easy to clean. Covered grooves prevent particles from being deposited. "In addition to functionality and quality, we attach great importance to aesthetics when designing our systems," says the technical manager. "Above all, the clear contours of the profiles and the timeless design of the item components speak for themselves." BioFluidix is currently developing a new device in the field of microfluidics and is also planning to use item profiles for this new development. The successful collaboration will therefore continue in the future. as
