Energy harvesting in damping technology

ACE Shock Absorbers is once again organizing the Innovace competition this year. Since the start date on May 1, it has been aimed at students from universities, technical colleges and universities of applied sciences in the fields of mechanical engineering, design, mechatronics and electrical engineering in Germany and abroad.

After the competition had to be canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, the focus in 2021 will be on sustainability. Individuals or teams of applicants, together with their supervising teacher, are invited to submit a design draft with technical proof of functionality and feasibility on the topic of "Energy Harvesting in Damping Technology" by September 30.

Products from the Stabilus Group portfolio, which also includes ACE shock absorbers, were to be the subject of the elaborations. The range of machine elements includes a variety of solutions for damping technology, speed control and vibration control technology. In many cases, components whose functional principle is to convert kinetic energy into thermal energy are used. These products are filled with a working medium, usually hydraulic oil or nitrogen, and until now have not utilized the energy released during the damping process or the translational movement of the piston rod to generate energy. For this reason, Innovace 2021 is now looking for ways to harness this energy. It is conceivable, for example, that this could be used to power sensors or communication devices autonomously.
