Telekom joins Industrial Internet Consortium

Deutsche Telekom has joined the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) and is contributing its strength in IoT connectivity, particularly in NarrowBand IoT and 5G. The aim of joining is to consolidate Europe's importance in the internationally positioned IIC.

Deutsche Telekom has joined the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC). "IoT connectivity is critical in many industries, including smart cities and manufacturing," says Richard Soley, Executive Director, IIC.

In dialog with the members of the IIC and its partners, Telekom wants to develop joint perspectives on the interoperability of systems. Needs and framework conditions for standardization and security requirements for IoT services and devices are also to be defined.

The US-based organization is at the forefront of driving the digital transformation of business and society internationally by accelerating the development, introduction and spread of IoT and Industry 4.0 solutions. "As a member of the IIC, we are delighted to be able to shape IoT together with our partners in the community and drive it forward internationally," says Ingo Hofacker, responsible for the IoT business in the Deutsche Telekom Group. "Industry 4.0 will only become a successful model if we succeed in ensuring that the different systems and technologies work together seamlessly on an international level."

"IoT connectivity is critical in many industries, including smart cities and manufacturing," says Richard Soley, Executive Director, IIC. "We welcome Deutsche Telekom and their expertise to join forces to advance Industry 4.0."

Telekom's aim is to make digitalization easy for customers. That is why Deutsche Telekom has invested in fast networks, the cloud, IoT applications and integrated security solutions over the years in order to equip itself for the digital world. The basis of all IoT applications is connectivity, which is why Deutsche Telekom is building a machine network based on NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) technology in eight European markets and the USA. The Group also offers its customers, for example from the manufacturing and automotive industries, the transportation sector, healthcare - or in the case of Smart City - the public sector, ready-made bundles of hardware, connectivity, IoT platform and analysis services.

Boost for international digitalization
Global cooperation can only work if the systems are compatible. The IIC is already working successfully with the Plattform Industrie 4.0 initiative to improve the interoperability of systems. This industry-oriented initiative was founded with the aim of implementing the future-oriented Industry 4.0 project of the German government's high-tech strategy. Deutsche Telekom is a member of the steering committee. The IIC and Plattform Industrie 4.0 have agreed to cooperate on an ongoing basis in order to jointly formulate requirements for standardization committees, design joint test environments for the reference architecture models and jointly increase the acceptance of Industrie 4.0 applications.
