Interoute's fiber optic network supports the Vatican's digital transformation

Interoute, the global cloud and network provider, has announced that its fiber optic network is supporting the launch of the new online portal of the Vatican Secretariat for Communication. The portal combines different media channels (radio, TV and publishing) on one interface. It thus supports the Church's plan to focus more on current digital developments.

The website allows users to easily search for information and offers them multimedia and multilingual content across different devices. Francesco Masci, Head of the Technology Department of the Secretariat for the Communication of the Holy See, says: "The reorganization of the Holy See's communication system has meant an important technological change, as the web, broadcasting and publishing sectors are now merged. In addition to the Internet portal, we will also launch other services and we are also looking into other projects to send interesting multimedia content, such as documentaries or other important productions, directly to users. Interoute's new fiber optic network forms the infrastructural basis that makes this innovative project possible."

Direct access to Interoute's digital backbone with its fiber optic infrastructure is an essential step for the implementation of the ambitious project. For this reason, the Vaktikan team has given the entire project the name "Backbone". Interoute owns and operates a worldwide private network comprising 72,000 kilometers of fiber optics throughout Europe. Interoute's fiber network provides the Vatican with critical support for the digital transformation of its communications strategy by delivering security, scalability and high performance. For an optimal user experience of the Vatican's content, especially for bandwidth-intensive audio-visual content, Interoute's fiber network enables fast and smooth data transmission as well as high resilience over long distances.
During the project, the Secretariat and Interoute worked closely together to find the best solutions within the strictly defined specifications. The project also included the installation of network cables in one of the most religiously, culturally and artistically significant places in the world, the Vatican City.

Gareth Williams, CEO of Interoute, commented: "We are proud to support the Secretariat for Communications of the Holy See with our many years of experience. Interoute has built a pan-European backbone infrastructure that is powering the digital transformation of global businesses. With our experience in building and managing one of the largest networks in Europe, we have the knowledge and skills to support this particular project, always taking into account delivery times and the constraints imposed by the cultural and artistic heritage of this important site."
