Fraunhofer IIS launches 5G Bavaria initiative

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) is launching a 5G initiative in Bavaria. The initiative supports the transition from research into the 5G mobile communications standard to its application.

5G Bavaria comprises a test center at Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen and various test environments in Bavaria. The companies have the opportunity to evaluate new mobile radio functionalities in an overall 5G system context by means of simulation and emulation in the laboratory as well as in a real mobile radio environment.

The new 5G standard should offer more in the future, but the transition from standardization to application is complex, especially as it can take up to four years between the definition of new 5G functions and market availability. During this time, it is difficult to test and develop future-proof communication applications without suitable test facilities. The new 5G test center at Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen and various 5G test environments (testbeds) in Bavaria will make this easier. According to project manager Bernhard Niemann, the test center will provide users with uncomplicated advice on the current usability of 5G for their use in the future

New transmission technologies are simulated at the test center, for example to predict whether they meet the requirements of the planned applications or to compare the performance of different technological approaches. Emulation, i.e. the testing of radio technologies in real time under conditions that are as close to reality as possible, simulates real transmission situations and conditions. In addition to the 5G test center, Fraunhofer IIS is preparing to set up and operate an Industry 4.0 testbed in Nuremberg and an automotive testbed in Rosenheim. A pilot study for a 5G satellite testbed is being carried out in Würzburg.
