Data flat rate for the Internet of Things

At the Mobile World Congress, Deutsche Telekom and Cologne-based mobile communications provider 1NCE presented Europe's first data flat rate for networked devices on the Internet of Things: Customers pay a one-off fee of 10 euros in the prepaid tariff and receive a data flat rate of up to 500 megabytes for the lifetime of the respective smart end device of ten years.

Deutsche Telekom and the Cologne-based mobile communications provider 1NCE are presenting Europe's first data flat rate for networked devices in the Internet of Things at the Mobile World Congress.

This means that costs incurred can be better calculated, as customers will no longer pay small, varying monthly amounts depending on the data volume used. The offer initially applies within the European Union as well as in Switzerland and Norway. 1NCE, in which Deutsche Telekom is also involved, networks machines and devices in the Internet of Things (IoT) that only transmit small amounts of data at irregular intervals - such as smart water meters or smoke detectors. Deutsche Telekom provides 1NCE capacities from its machine network as part of 5G.

Tariff with one-off payment
"With this tariff, we will make it as easy as possible for our customers to quickly implement new IoT solutions. This means no monthly billing, no additional fees, no tariff jungle," says Alexander P. Sator, founder and CEO of 1NCE. "As a pioneer in NB-IoT, Deutsche Telekom is effectively driving forward the expansion of the network," says Sator. "We hope that this close cooperation will lead to faster growth in the European IoT market."

Both companies want to make the use of IoT solutions as cost-effective as possible for customers and are using Deutsche Telekom's NarrowBand IoT technology (NB-IoT) to do so. NB-IoT achieves long ranges, consumes hardly any energy, costs little and is aimed in particular at customers from the energy sector, the transportation and logistics sector and the public sector with its smart cities. "Deutsche Telekom's own service-based NB-IoT offering is optimally complemented by 1NCE's simple, disruptive business model. Together, we are addressing a larger market and creating the best customer experience," says Hagen Rickmann, Managing Director Business Customers at Deutsche Telekom.
