Protect energy packs on the robot

Mara Hofacker,

Longer service life thanks to suitable feedback system

To protect energy packs on robots from damage and wear, Murrplastik Systemtechnik has developed three different return systems in various sizes. The simple, lightweight and space-saving return system 21/29 is available for small robots and the linear systems R-Tec Liner and R-Tec Box for large industrial robots. All three systems keep the energy package taut at all times thanks to the length compensation and still allow all necessary movements.

For robot users, the focus is on the flexibility, assembly time, service life and stability of a hosepack. The basic requirement for a long service life of energy packages in dynamic applications is to avoid unwanted movements. Particularly when installing on axis 3 to axis 6, the cables must be laid very flexibly to allow all the necessary movements. To solve this problem, Murrplastik recommends the use of a suitable feedback system to guarantee a long service life.

Variety of return system variants

The return systems 21/29, R-Tec Liner and R-Tec Box from Murrplastik ensure optimum and low-wear guidance of the energy packs from axis 3 to axis 6. The lightweight and space-saving return system 21/29 for small robots is the simplest solution for returning energy packs. It provides a length compensation of 150 mm. The return system 21/29 weighs only approx. 380 g, can be easily used with overhead robots and is available for the hose sizes M25/P21 and M32/P29 for the corrugated tube variants EW and EWX. The system is characterized by the fact that it is low-wear, low-maintenance and low-noise and has very good sliding properties.

The return system 21/29 consists of the following individual parts: Basic structure (plate with two system holders), compression spring, sliding ball joint, protector and protective hose. Installation and replacement of hose packages is quick and easy. The system can be attached to the robot directly or with spacer sleeves if the drilling pattern is compatible. If the hole pattern is not compatible, an additional adapter plate is required for mounting.

R-Tec liner: over 18 million cycles in the service life test

With the compact R-Tec liner, Murrplastik has succeeded in creating a linear system that effectively guides the energy package with low wear thanks to the patented and integrated spring return system. The length compensation is between 350 and 550 mm. At a stroke of 350 mm, the tensile force is 140 N and at 550 mm 230 N. The R-Tec Liner consists of a specially manufactured, lightweight aluminum housing with spring, slider and trumpet (end piece). The housing gives the system additional stability and makes it a flexible solution. It offers protection against dirt and damage to the components. The R-Tec liner is also robust. It can withstand temperatures from -40 °C to 120 °C, and even 150 °C for short periods, and complies with UL94 classification V2. In combination with the anodized aluminium, the built-in slider has a long service life. This makes the R-Tec liner very low-maintenance.

In Murrplastik's service life test, the slider achieved a cycle life of over 18 million cycles. If wear does occur after a longer period of time, it is possible to reorder and replace each individual component. Maintenance is very simple. If, for example, the spring needs to be replaced, the box outlet does not need to be dismantled. This is because the box outlet has a recess that allows the screw to be opened with a conventional Allen key. The R-Tec liner is mounted with a base plate. However, it can also be fitted to selected robots without a base plate. A second feedback system or a valve terminal can also be installed on the cover of the R-Tec Liner. The hose packages are easily interchangeable. Suitable hose sizes for the EW-PAE and EWX-PAE hose types are available in the following diameters: 56, 70, 80 and 95 mm. The R-Tec Liner is used in robotics and in factory and machine automation.

Like the R-Tec Liner, the R-Tec Box ensures safe, low-wear and effective guidance of the energy packs in complex movement sequences and in the smallest of spaces. The aim of the development was to offer customers a universal and compact system with the patented slider system for guiding hosepacks. Various sizes are available. In addition to the large R-Tec boxes for hose diameters of 70 and 56 mm, more compact versions are also available for hose sizes of 48, 36 and 29 mm. As sales of low and medium load robots (15-60 kg) have increased continuously, Murrplastik has developed the small R-Tec Box-S 29/36 - suitable for the sizes M32/P29 and M40/P36 for the corrugated tube variants EW and EWX. This return system is available with three different length compensations: 270, 400 and 600 mm. The R-Tec Box - with the integrated and unique spring return system - also has a specially manufactured housing. This is made of mod. Polypropylene, robust and can withstand temperatures between -40 °C and 120 °C, and even 150 °C for short periods. The box protects the components from dirt and damage. The components include compression springs, sliders and an optional strain relief for the largest version. Spare parts can be reordered individually in the event of wear.

The R-Tec Box can be adapted to many different robot types. The installation is easy to assemble and allows a wide range of adjustment and application options. The various base plates for mounting the R-Tex Box are adapted to the different model series of the various robot manufacturers. If required, customers can ask Murrplastik for their individual size. Both maintenance and replacement of the energy pack are quick and easy thanks to quick-release fasteners. The spring assembly can be replaced quickly. Another advantage is that the R-Tec Box is low-noise thanks to its sliding properties.
